Jean Said Makdisi is a Palestinian writer and scholar whose work focuses on memoir, Arab women’s lives, and the social history of the Middle East. She taught English and humanities at Beirut University College and drew on her experiences living in Beirut during the Lebanese Civil War for her acclaimed memoir Beirut Fragments (1990). Her later memoir, Teta, Mother, and Me (2005), explores three generations of Arab women and family history.
