Isak Dinesen was the pen name of Danish author Karen Blixen (1885–1962). After managing a coffee plantation in Kenya from 1914 to 1931, she returned to Denmark and began her major writing career in English, publishing acclaimed works including Seven Gothic Tales, Out of Africa, Winter’s Tales, and Anecdotes of Destiny, which contains “Babette’s Feast.” Her fiction is known for its ornate prose, storytelling tradition, historical settings, and elements of the Gothic and fantastic.
