She later became a senior editor at Creative Loafing and held leadership roles at the Chicago Reader, LA Weekly, Atlanta magazine, and ProPublica. Her first book, BMF: The Rise and Fall of Big Meech and the Black Mafia Family, chronicles the rise and collapse of a major cocaine empire.
