Arthur Ransome (1884–1967) was an English author and journalist who began his career writing literary essays, biographies, criticism, folklore collections, and newspaper journalism, including reporting from Russia during the First World War and Revolution. He became best known for the twelve Swallows and Amazons novels, beginning with Swallows and Amazons in 1930, which established him as one of the leading British writers of children’s adventure fiction. He also wrote extensively about sailing and angling.
