Barbara Pym (1913–1980) was an English novelist known for witty, understated portraits of mid-20th-century English social life. After studying English at Oxford, she published a series of acclaimed novels in the 1950s, including Some Tame Gazelle, Excellent Women, and A Glass of Blessings, before a period of publishing rejection. Her career revived in 1977 when Philip Larkin and Lord David Cecil named her one of the most underrated writers of the century; her novel Quartet in Autumn was shortlisted for the Booker Prize.
