Alan Paton (1903–1988) was a South African novelist, short-story writer, biographer, and autobiographer best known for Cry, the Beloved Country (1948), a landmark novel about racial injustice and apartheid-era South Africa. He later wrote Too Late the Phalarope, Ah, But Your Land Is Beautiful, short-story collections, biographies, and two autobiographical volumes, while also campaigning actively against apartheid.
