Carolyn Keene is the collective pseudonym used by authors writing for the Stratemeyer Syndicate’s Nancy Drew and related girls’ mystery series, which began in 1930. Mildred Wirt Benson was the principal early writer, authoring 23 of the first 30 Nancy Drew books and helping shape Nancy’s adventurous, independent character. Benson also wrote more than 130 children’s novels under several names and worked as a journalist for nearly six decades.
