Charlotte M. Canning is an American theatre historian, author, and professor at the University of Texas at Austin, where she heads the Performance as Public Practice program. Her books include Feminist Theaters in the USA: Staging Women’s Experience, The Most American Thing in America: Circuit Chautauqua as Performance, On the Performance Front: US Theatre and Internationalism, and Theatre & the USA. Her scholarship focuses on U.S. performance history, feminist theatre, and the relationships among theatre, gender, race, sexuality, and national identity.
