Francis Parkman (1823–1893) was an American historian and travel writer whose career centered on vivid narratives of North American exploration, settlement, and colonial conflict. He published The Oregon Trail in 1849 after traveling across the Great Plains, and later produced his landmark eight-part historical series France and England in North America. Despite chronic illness and severe visual problems, he became renowned for combining meticulous research with dramatic, literary prose.
