Walter Farley (1915–1989) was an American author best known for The Black Stallion, published in 1941 while he was a Columbia University student. He went on to write more than 30 books, chiefly horse-centered adventures for children and young adults, including the Black Stallion and Island Stallion series. During World War II, he served as a U.S. Army reporter, and after the war he devoted himself to full-time writing and raising horses.
