Donald McCaig (1940–2018) was an award-winning American novelist, poet, essayist, and sheep-farm writer whose fiction often explored rural life, the American Civil War, and the postwar South. He wrote the acclaimed Civil War novels Jacob’s Ladder and Canaan, as well as the authorized Gone with the Wind novels Rhett Butler’s People and Ruth’s Journey. He also wrote nonfiction about sheepdogs, farming, and rural life, including the national bestsellers Nop’s Trials and Eminent Dogs, Dangerous Men.
