Bill James (1929–2023), the pseudonym of Welsh novelist Allan James Tucker, began his career as a journalist for Cardiff newspapers, the Daily Mirror, The Sunday Times, radio, and television before becoming a full-time novelist. He wrote more than 30 Harpur & Iles crime novels, known for their mordant humor, surreal style, and bleak depiction of police and criminal worlds, along with espionage novels, historical fiction, satire, and short stories. He also published under the names David Craig, Judith Jones, and James Tucker.
