Dot Jackson was a prizewinning journalist, reporter, columnist, and editor who spent many years at the Charlotte Observer and covered the people, culture, and environmental struggles of the American South. Drawing on her Appalachian heritage and years of collecting regional stories and folklore, she wrote Refuge, her first novel, published in 2006. She also co-authored nonfiction books about South Carolina rivers and was inducted into the South Carolina Academy of Authors in 2010.
