Nellie Bly (1864–1922), the pen name of Elizabeth Jane Cochran Seaman, was an American journalist who began writing for the Pittsburgh Dispatch in 1885 and later became a pioneering investigative reporter for Joseph Pulitzer’s New York World. Her undercover exposé of the Blackwell’s Island asylum became Ten Days in a Mad-House, and her account of her record-setting journey around the world became Around the World in Seventy-Two Days. She also wrote travel journalism, social commentary, and serialized mystery and romance fiction.
