Norman F. Cantor (1929–2004) was a Canadian-American medieval historian and professor who taught at Princeton, Columbia, Brandeis, SUNY Binghamton, the University of Illinois at Chicago, and New York University. He became widely known for accessible, narrative-driven histories, especially The Civilization of the Middle Ages and Inventing the Middle Ages, and later wrote popular works on antiquity, the Black Death, Jewish history, and Alexander the Great. After retiring from NYU in 1999, he worked as a full-time writer until his death.
