William Zinsser (1922–2015) was an American writer, editor, journalist, literary critic, and teacher. He began his career at the New York Herald Tribune in 1946, later wrote for major magazines, taught nonfiction writing at Yale, and served as executive editor of the Book-of-the-Month Club. He wrote 19 nonfiction books, most notably On Writing Well, a widely influential guide to clear, concise prose, as well as works on memoir, travel, music, baseball, and American culture.
