Manly Wade Wellman (1903–1986) was an American writer whose professional career began in 1927 as a newspaper reporter and pulp-fiction contributor. He became best known for fantasy and horror stories rooted in Appalachian and Native American folklore, especially the Silver John tales, while also writing science fiction, mysteries, historical fiction, nonfiction, and juvenile adventure. He taught creative writing at the University of North Carolina and received several major awards for his fiction and nonfiction.
