Laura Esquivel is a Mexican novelist, screenwriter, and journalist born in Mexico City in 1950. She began writing plays while working as a kindergarten teacher and later created children’s television programs before turning to film scripts and fiction. Her first novel, Like Water for Chocolate, became an international bestseller and was adapted into an acclaimed film; her later novels include The Law of Love, Swift as Desire, and Malinche.
