Ernest J. Gaines (1933–2019) was an American novelist and short-story writer whose fiction drew on his childhood in rural Louisiana to portray African American life, race, community, and injustice in the South. After studying writing at San Francisco State University and Stanford University, he published ten books of fiction, including Catherine Carmier, The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman, A Gathering of Old Men, and A Lesson Before Dying, and later taught creative writing at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
