Frances Hardinge is a British children’s and young adult author who studied English at Oxford and began publishing after a friend submitted her debut novel, Fly by Night, to Macmillan. Published in 2005, it won the Branford Boase Award and launched a career focused on imaginative, atmospheric fiction. Her novel The Lie Tree won the 2015 Costa Book of the Year, and she was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 2018.
