John Julius Norwich (1929–2018) was an English popular historian, travel writer, broadcaster, and author of more than twenty books. After leaving the British Foreign Service in 1964, he became a full-time writer, producing acclaimed histories of Norman Sicily, Venice, Byzantium, the Mediterranean, the papacy, England, and France, along with travel books, memoirs, anthologies, and works on art and architecture. He also wrote and presented approximately thirty historical television documentaries.
