Colin Dexter (1930–2017) was an English crime writer best known for his thirteen Inspector Morse novels, beginning with Last Bus to Woodstock in 1975 and concluding with The Remorseful Day in 1999. He began writing mysteries while working in education, and his Oxford-set detective fiction became the basis for the long-running Inspector Morse television series and related adaptations. Dexter also wrote novellas, short stories, and crossword books, and received multiple Crime Writers’ Association awards.
