After earning a master's degree in journalism, he wrote adventure-travel and outdoor articles for publications including Outside, Smithsonian, and The New York Times Magazine, and later published books such as Last Breath and At the Mercy of the River. He subsequently shifted toward narrative history, specializing in early American exploration, wilderness, and encounters between explorers and Indigenous peoples; his books include Astoria, Young Washington, Gallop Toward the Sun, and The Lost Cities of El Norte.
