After working for United Press International for 14 years—including reporting from Saigon during the Vietnam War—he became a freelance writer in 1977. Beginning with Cellar of Horror in 1989, he wrote numerous bestselling true-crime books about notorious murders, trials, and criminal cases, along with several fictional works and a film novelization.
