Deborah Johnson is an American novelist born in Missouri and raised in Omaha, Nebraska. After college, she lived in San Francisco and spent 18 years in Rome, working as a translator, editor, and broadcaster at Vatican Radio. She later returned to the United States and built a writing career focused on historically grounded stories about race, justice, and the American South, including The Air Between Us and The Secret of Magic; she has also written historical romances under the name Deborah Johns.
