W. P. Kinsella (1935–2016) was a Canadian novelist and short-story writer whose career centered on two recurring subjects: baseball and First Nations life. He published his first major collection, Dance Me Outside, in 1977, followed by novels including Shoeless Joe (1982), The Iowa Baseball Confederacy (1986), and Butterfly Winter (2011). His baseball fiction often blended literary realism with fantasy and magical realism; Shoeless Joe was adapted into the film Field of Dreams.
