Ann Rule (1931–2015) was an American true-crime writer who began publishing crime articles in detective magazines before becoming a bestselling author. Her first book, The Stranger Beside Me (1980), chronicled her personal acquaintance with Ted Bundy and established her reputation for meticulously researched accounts of murders and serial killers. She wrote 35 true-crime books and one crime novel, with many becoming New York Times bestsellers.
