Charles Willeford (1919–1988) was an American novelist, poet, essayist, and literary critic whose writing career spanned paperback fiction, crime novels, memoir, and criticism. After serving in the U.S. Army and Air Force and later teaching English and philosophy in Florida, he became best known for his hardboiled Hoke Moseley crime series, beginning with Miami Blues (1984). His distinctive work combines noir violence, dark humor, social observation, and genre-bending experimentation.
