Tennessee Williams (1911–1983), born Thomas Lanier Williams III, was an American playwright whose writing career was established by the Broadway successes The Glass Menagerie (1945) and A Streetcar Named Desire (1947). He went on to write major works including Summer and Smoke, The Rose Tattoo, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Suddenly Last Summer, Sweet Bird of Youth, and The Night of the Iguana, as well as novels, short stories, poetry, essays, and memoirs.
