J. P. Donleavy (1926–2017) was an American-Irish novelist, short-story writer, playwright, and essayist who lived much of his life in Ireland. He began publishing in the 1950s and gained international recognition with The Ginger Man (1955), a famously comic and picaresque novel. His writing is known for its satirical edge, dark humor, sexual frankness, and eccentric characters; other major works include A Singular Man and The Beastly Beatitudes of Balthazar B.
