Beryl Bainbridge was an English novelist who began her career as an actress before turning to fiction. She wrote 18 novels marked by sharp, darkly comic prose, first exploring troubled contemporary lives and later reimagining historical events and figures. Her work won major British literary prizes, and she was shortlisted for the Booker Prize five times; she also wrote journalism and theatre criticism.
