Dorothy Dunnett (1923–2001) was a Scottish novelist whose writing career began in the late 1950s. She became renowned for the meticulously researched Lymond Chronicles, set in sixteenth-century Europe, followed by the eight-volume House of Niccolò series set during the Renaissance. She also wrote the historical novel King Hereafter about Macbeth and a series of mystery novels featuring spy and portrait painter Johnson Johnson, originally published under her maiden name, Dorothy Halliday.
