Sid Fleischman (1920–2010) was an American author who began his writing career as a newspaper reporter and novelist after serving in World War II, later becoming a Hollywood screenwriter. He went on to write more than forty books for children, combining humor, adventure, history, folklore, and the influence of his early career as a professional magician. His best-known work, The Whipping Boy, won the 1987 Newbery Medal; he also wrote biographies, adult fiction, screenplays, and books about magic.
