Octavia E. Butler was an award-winning African American science-fiction writer whose career began with published stories in the 1970s and expanded into acclaimed novels including Kindred, the Patternist series, Lilith’s Brood, and the Parable series. Known for lean prose, strong protagonists, and incisive social commentary, she explored race, gender, power, climate change, and human adaptation. Her honors included the Hugo and Nebula Awards, a MacArthur “Genius” Grant, and the PEN West Lifetime Achievement Award.
