Francine Prose is an American novelist, short-story writer, essayist, critic, and translator whose writing career began with her 1973 novel Judah the Pious. She has published literary fiction, young-adult fiction, short-story collections, essays, art and literary criticism, biographies, and translations, with work appearing in publications including The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Wall Street Journal, and Harper’s, where she is a contributing editor. She has also taught creative writing at institutions including Harvard, Sarah Lawrence, and the Iowa Writers’ Workshop.
