D. M. Thomas (1935–2023) was a British Cornish poet, novelist, translator, biographer, and playwright. He began his literary career as a poet and later became a full-time writer of innovative fiction, gaining international recognition for his controversial 1981 novel The White Hotel, which was shortlisted for the Booker Prize. He also translated Russian poets including Anna Akhmatova and Alexander Pushkin and wrote an acclaimed biography of Alexander Solzhenitsyn.
