James Lee McDonough is a Civil War historian, educator, and author of approximately ten books. After teaching history at Lipscomb University, Pepperdine University, and Auburn University, where he became professor emeritus, he built a writing career focused primarily on the Civil War in the Western Theater, including books on Shiloh, Stones River, Chattanooga, Franklin, Nashville, and Kentucky. His later work includes the New York Times bestselling biography William Tecumseh Sherman: In the Service of My Country: A Life and a study of a World War II B-17 pilot.
