John Christopher was the pseudonym of British author Samuel Youd (1922–2012), who wrote more than fifty novels and numerous short stories under several names. He began writing seriously after serving in World War II and achieved his first major success with the ecological disaster novel The Death of Grass (1956). He later became especially well known for his young-adult science-fiction series The Tripods, beginning with The White Mountains (1967).
