John Kendrick Bangs (1862–1922) was an American humorist, satirist, editor, and prolific author. He began writing for Life in 1883, later edited humor departments at Harper & Brothers and Harper’s Weekly, and published novels, short-story collections, essays, verse, plays, and children’s books. His comic afterlife stories, including A House-Boat on the Styx and its sequels, established the fantasy subgenre now known as Bangsian fantasy.
