John Knowles (1926–2001) was an American novelist best known for his acclaimed debut, A Separate Peace (1959), a coming-of-age novel drawn partly from his experiences at Phillips Exeter Academy. A graduate of Yale, he went on to write several additional novels, including The Paragon, Peace Breaks Out, and A Stolen Past, and received the William Faulkner Award and the Rosenthal Award.
