Irving Stone (1903–1989) was an American novelist best known for pioneering the “biographical novel,” combining extensive historical research with fictionalized narrative about the lives of major artists, politicians, and intellectuals. His career began with Lust for Life (1934), about Vincent van Gogh, and continued with acclaimed works including The Agony and the Ecstasy, about Michelangelo, as well as biographies and historical novels about figures such as Jack London, Abraham Lincoln, and Charles Darwin.
