Erich Kästner (1899–1974) was a German writer, poet, journalist, screenwriter, and satirist. He first gained attention in the 1920s for witty, socially critical poetry and journalism, then became internationally famous for children’s novels such as Emil and the Detectives (1929), The Flying Classroom, and Lottie and Lisa, the basis for The Parent Trap. He also wrote the adult novel Fabian and continued publishing children’s books, poetry, essays, and screenplays despite Nazi censorship.
