Woodrow Wilson Rawls (1913–1984) was an American children's author who grew up in the Ozark Mountains of Oklahoma. Inspired by Jack London's The Call of the Wild, he pursued writing while working as a carpenter and traveling, eventually publishing the autobiographical children's classic Where the Red Fern Grows in 1961 and Summer of the Monkeys in 1976. He later became a popular school speaker and wrote about rural childhood, animals, adventure, and perseverance.
