After 17 years as a high-school science teacher, he began speaking nationally about classroom management and turned those presentations into The First Days of School: How to Be an Effective Teacher, co-written with Rosemary T. Wong. Published in 1991, the book became a widely used professional-development text and led to additional books, videos, and educational publications.
