Charles Sheffield (1935–2002) was an English-born physicist and science-fiction author who began publishing fiction in 1977 while pursuing a scientific career. He wrote more than thirty books and over ninety short stories, becoming known especially for rigorous, optimistic hard science fiction, including the Heritage Universe novels. His work earned the Hugo, Nebula, and John W. Campbell Memorial Awards, and he served as president of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America.
