Gail Godwin is an American novelist and short-story writer whose writing career began when her University of Iowa doctoral dissertation was published as her first novel, The Perfectionists, in 1970. She has published numerous novels, story collections, memoirs, journals, and nonfiction works, earning three National Book Award finalist nominations and multiple New York Times bestsellers. Her fiction often explores women’s identities, family relationships, the South, art, spirituality, and psychological conflict.
