Kanae Minato is a Japanese novelist born in Hiroshima in 1973. She began writing fiction after age 30 and made her professional debut in 2007 after winning the Mystery Story Newcomer Award for “The Priest.” Her debut novel, Confessions, became a bestseller, won the 2009 Japan Booksellers’ Award, and established her reputation for psychologically disturbing “iyamisu” mysteries; she has since published numerous novels, including Penance, The Star at Dawn, and Utopia.
