James Atlas (1949–2019) was an American writer, literary biographer, editor, and publisher. He began his writing career with Delmore Schwartz: The Life of an American Poet, later wrote Bellow: A Biography and the memoir My Life in the Middle Ages, and contributed essays and criticism to publications including The New Yorker and The New York Times. He also founded the Penguin Lives biography series.
