Angela Thirkell (1890–1961) was an English and Australian novelist who began publishing journalism and short stories in Australia in the 1920s. After returning to England in 1929, she turned to novel writing, achieving success with High Rising (1933). She published regularly through the 1930s–1950s, producing 36 books, most set in the fictional English county of Barsetshire and portraying contemporary village and country life with wit and social observation.
