Mary Monroe is a New York Times bestselling African American fiction author whose writing career began with the publication of her first novel, The Upper Room, in 1985. A self-taught writer and the daughter of Alabama sharecroppers, she is best known for God Don't Like Ugly and its related series, as well as Southern-set novels exploring family, relationships, betrayal, and resilience. She has continued publishing bestselling fiction with Kensington's Dafina imprint and lives in Oakland, California.
